Call for applications for General Service positions – Group 2 candidates
This is an open call for applications for UNHCR Group 2 candidates for General Service (GS) positions. Successfully screened candidates will be given access to apply to internally advertised GS positions with the UNHCR Representation in Romania.
What is Group 2?
UNHCR uses candidate groups in the recruitment for General Service positions. Group 2 is a candidate pool consisting of people who fall under the categories below, with one year of cumulative or continuous service1 in UNHCR/UN in Romania.
- Current2 locally recruited UNHCR staff members holding a Temporary Appointment.
- Former locally recruited UNHCR staff members who held an indefinite or fixed-term appointment (within 2 years of separation for males and 5 years for females).
- National United Nations Volunteers currently2 working for UNHCR.
- National UNOPS and Individual Contractors currently2 working for UNHCR.
- Current2 UNHCR General Service staff members holding an indefinite or fixed-term appointment applying to a position in the same category two grades above the staff member’s personal grade.
- Current2 UNHCR staff members in the International Professional category holding an indefinite or fixed-term appointment.
- Current2 UNHCR National Professional Officers holding an indefinite or fixed-term appointment.
- Current2 locally recruited female staff members from other UN system organizations holding the equivalent of an indefinite or fixed-term appointment.
1One cumulative year of service can also be a combination of categories. Breaks in service of three months or less do not impact the qualifying period.
2Current means at the time of application for the open call.
Group 2 status is valid for three years, during which candidates will be given access to apply for internal GS vacancies with the UNHCR Representation in Romania.

What are the other Groups?
Candidates for vacancy announcements in the GS category are divided in Group 1, Group 2 and external candidates. Group 1 consists of current GS staff members in UNHCR who hold an indefinite or fixed-term appointment, and are granted priority consideration in the recruitment/assignment process. Group 2 are the candidates mentioned above. External candidates are all other candidates who do not fall under Group 1 and Group 2.

Legal education program for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees in Romania
Between 20 February and 16 April 2020, global business law firm DLA Piper, along with the Representation in Romania of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the National Romanian Council for Refugees, will run the Know Your Rights Project in Bucharest.
Know Your Rights is a 9-week legal education program for up to 20-25 asylum seekers, refugees and migrants with various forms of protection (“newcomers”) who are building new lives in Romania.
If you are a newcomer based in or around Bucharest and want to know more about your rights and duties (related to starting a business, getting a job, healthcare, housing and more) this course is for you!
Who is eligible to apply?
- You are over 18 years old.
- You speak English or Romanian.
- You live in or near Bucharest.

- The program is free but once you subscribe, we expect you to attend all the sessions regularly.

“Media, Migrants and Refugees” – Media Workshop with Nick Thorpe (BBC Correspondent for Central Europe)
First of all, congratulations on the interest you have shown in the Media Workshop that UNHCR Romania and the West University of Timisoara are organizing. Your initiative confirms that media professionals in Romania are keen on sharing their skills and acquiring new ones on topics that seem to present more and more interest to the public.
Due to this, UNHCR and West University of Timisoara considered that is vital to give media professionals the opportunity to access first-hand information on refugee-related issues, as well as an open dialogue with world-renowned journalist and writer Nick Thorpe, the facilitator of the workshop.
About Nick Thorpe:
He was born by the River Medway in Upnor, Kent in February 1960. After youthful years spent mostly on the road, in Europe and in Africa, he settled on the shores of the River Danube in Budapest in February 1986. He was the first western reporter to be based full time here. He has been living in central Europe ever since, mostly in Hungary, but with spells in Prague, the Balkans, and the Middle East. He has worked as regional correspondent for the BBC, the Independent, UPI, the Guardian and the Observer. Since 1996 He has been Central Europe correspondent for the BBC. His first book: ’89 The Unfinished Revolution – Power and Powerlessness in Eastern Europe’ was published by Reportage Press in November 2009. He is also the co-director, with his wife Andrea, of two documentary films, and one short feature (The Fairy Island, 1993; Vigilance, 1997; The Vineleaf and the Rose, 2002)
