Somalia National Group

The Somali displacement crisis covers nearly one million refugees in Kenya, Ethiopia, Yemen, and other affected states, and over one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Somalia itself. While IDP returns within Somalia are on going and some Somali refugees are returning, the numbers are very small at this stage. The situation remains volatile and safety and security are critical for bringing about solutions for displacement.

The Solutions Alliance Somalia Group was established out of an interest in pursuing a new approach to the entrenched protraction of the Somali displacement. The Group recognises that the context requires innovative and comprehensive solutions-oriented thinking involving development approaches and actors. The National Group is pursuing evidence-based, participatory, and enhanced political and economic analysis at the local, national, and transnational levels. It aims to support governments to ensure that planning and viability assessments address the issue of displacement with respect to political, social, economic, and developmental costs and benefits.

It is the Group’s intention to ensure effective and close linkages between its efforts and those of the on going under the High Commissioner’s Global Initiative on Somali Refugees (GISR).
