Amani is from Libya but had to flee her home after her family found out she was gay. She sought asylum in Italy, where she spent almost a year living in a shelter with 60 other women. “I felt alone and was hiding my identity because I was afraid people would attack me,” she said

Maria was forced to flee political persecution in Chile with her family when she was four. She found a kindred spirit in Amani after the pair met at a meeting for charity volunteers last year. They now live in Milan together.
