Disaster description
An earthquake of 5.6 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in West Java Province (Indonesia) on 21 November at 6.21 UTC (13.21 local time). The epicentre of the earthquake was on land, about 10 km south-west of Cianjur Regency (West Java Province). USGS PAGER estimates that up to 242,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 978,000 people to strong shaking. The earthquake event was felt as well in the Jakarta Capital City, according to media reports. According to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), two people died and four others sustained injuries in Cianjur. Initial damage estimations report at least seven destroyed houses, two damaged government buildings, three damaged educational facilities, and one damaged place of worship. Warnings for heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds have been issued for 21-22 November over West Java, including Cianjur Regency. (ECHO, 21 Nov 2022)
A deadly 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck western Indonesia Monday, killing at least 162 people and injuring hundreds in Cianjur in West Java. Hundreds of structures were destroyed or damaged in the area, where landslides are frequent. According to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), the number of fatalities reached 271 people while 40 people are still missing, and more than 2,000 have been injured. In addition, 61,908 people have been displaced, while 22,241 houses have been seriously damaged, 11,641 moderately damaged, and 22,090 slightly damaged. (ECHO, 24 Nov 2022)
According to the latest official estimate as of November 24, 100 children under 15 years have lost their lives, making up 37 per cent of the 272 total number of persons killed. Reports indicate that 2,046 persons have been injured, 39 persons are missing and 62,882 persons have been displaced. Damage assessments show that 45 schools have been affected in the earthquake area. An estimated 18 students and 5 teachers are reported as casualties, and 267 students and 10 teachers have been injured. (UNICEF, 25 Nov 2022)
As of 27 November, 321 people have been confirmed killed, with 595 people seriously injured and more than 10,000 people slightly injured. The Government has registered 73,874 displaced people (including 92 people with disability, 1,207 pregnant women, and 4,240 elderly people) and more than 62,000 houses were reported damaged at various level of severity. The number of casualties has increased across the West Java Province (Indonesia) due to the 5.6M earthquake at a depth of 10 km that occurred on 21 November at 6.21 UTC in Cianjur Regency. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports, as of 29 November, 327 fatalities, 13 people still missing, 68 injured people currently hospitalised in Cianjur Town regional hospital and a total of approximately 108,700 evacuated people across several evacuation points. Following Cianjur earthquake in West Java, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported around 7,700 people were injured due to falling structures and debris while 73,000 people were displaced, and about 62,000 housing units and 368 schools were either damaged or destroyed. The government confirmed that assistance for renovating houses affected by the earthquake would begin this week. Indonesia experienced multiple earthquakes above 6 M this week including 6.2 M earthquake in East Java province on 6 December at a depth of 10 km. One person was injured and four houses were damaged in the town of Garut and 6.1 M earthquake in West Java at the of 104 km on 8 December according to BNPB. (ECHO, 8 Dec 2022)
According to the damage assessment results, more than 56,000 houses, 701 schools and 18 health facilities were damaged along with other critical infrastructure. The Government of Indonesia at the district level with the support of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and other line ministries led the emergency response to address the needs of shelter, clean water, medical care and protection and other challenges facing children and communities.
