GENEVA – The needs of refugees and migrants worldwide have never been greater, and the U.S. resettlement program is one of the most important in the world.
The longstanding U.S. policy of welcoming refugees has created a win-win situation: it has saved the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world who have in turn enriched and strengthened their new societies. The contribution of refugees and migrants to their new homes worldwide has been overwhelmingly positive.

BELGRADE, Serbia – Refugees and migrants wanting to leave an unsanitary, improvised shelter in Belgrade are being transferred to emergency accommodation opened recently by the government outside the city. The move comes after mounting concern over hundreds sleeping rough in sub-zero temperatures who resisted previous appeals to transfer.

BANGKOK, January 16 – The UN Refugee Agency warmly welcomes the Royal Thai Government’s recent approval of a framework to enhance the identification and protection of refugees.
On January 10, Thailand’s Cabinet approved in principle a proposal to finalize and implement a screening mechanism for undocumented immigrants and refugees.
The UN Refugee Agency urges governments to do more to help and protect refugees and migrants battling freezing temperatures in Europe.

BANGKOK, 29 December.– In a move welcomed by the UN Refugee Agency, some 80,000 stateless children and young adults in Thailand could benefit from a recent government resolution to reduce statelessness in the country.
Earlier this month, the Thai Cabinet approved a resolution on “Guidance and Measures to Address Legal Status Problems and Problems of Stateless Persons in Thailand”, which is pending official proclamation.

For the first time since the battle for Aleppo erupted in 2012, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has been able to enter the old city of Aleppo. The scale of the destruction to infrastructure and historic buildings was evident.
More than 23,000 stateless people have been granted Thai nationality in the last four years as the Southeast Asian nation seeks to end statelessness by 2024.

The UN Refugee Agency has welcomed the progress made by the Governments of Indonesia and the Philippines to confirm the nationality of nearly 3,000 people of Indonesian descent living in the southern Philippines. This is one of a series of positive steps taken by ASEAN States since the launch of a global campaign to end statelessness by 2024.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today continues a special discussion series on the important role of faith in providing international protection for refugees at a time of record-high levels of forced displacement.
Titled “Buddhism and Humanitarianism Discussion Series”, the talk was attended by renowned Buddhist monk V. Vajiramedhi, UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Volker Türk and Thai actress Khemanit Jamikorn.
