Salvini orders asylum committees to restrict access to humanitarian permits. Absent legal channels for the migrant workers Italy actually needs, humanitarian permits have been one of few means to acquire temporary papers (& for torture survivors to stay)

There are currently no NGO rescue ships in the Central Mediterranean. It is horrifying to think of people drowning in preventable shipwrecks

Still important to remember this tweet. And while continues to provide emergency assistance at disembarkation point, we shouldn't forget that intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard end up in detention. And children are no exception.

HRW has serious reservations about Libya’s capacity to perform SAR duties. Libya shld not be considered a place of safety. Libya can & shld coordinate w/ other coastal states & shipmasters at sea to ensure rescue in intl waters & disembarkation in places of safety outside Libya.

There's a lot to worry about in the conclusions on migration, but perhaps most alarming is the apparent consensus on blocking NGO rescues at sea & beefing up Libyan coast guard forces. A recipe for more deaths at sea & more brutality on land

EU leaders applaude themselves: each has won a petty battle at & new ways to "stem influx" are on the table. Meanwhile, refugees/migrants have nothing to celebrate: - detention centres in Libya are filling up - more people are dying at sea - no new ways to travel safely

Today at least 100 more vulnerable people feared dead as their boat capsized off . Destroying independent search & rescue capacity in the will only lead to more unnecessary deaths at sea. The human cost is horrendous.

: tentative agreement to work together to process asylum seekers inside EU could be promising as long as it safeguards rights and avoids detention. But they also agreed to obstruct NGO rescues groups and reinforce Libya’s interdictions, deepening EU complicity in abuse.
