483 have died in the central Mediterranean route since 19 June. It is necessary to reinforce the presence of rescue ships in the Med in order to avoid further loss of life.

More people drowning in the Mediterranean. Rescue at sea must not be taken hostage by politics.

Is the trying to advance even further its cooperation (read: do what it takes to stop people from crossing borders towards Europe) with a government responsible for mass atrocities on its own population?

Only concrete points in summit statement were to “continue supporting Libyan coast guard” (to take people back to hellish detention centres) & warning to NGOs “not to obstruct” CG operations. No NGOs off now - only result is hundreds of deaths over last few days

We should not accept such tragedy as something that cannot be avoided. The day we will be indifferent, we will loose the right to call ourselves human beings

3 children in my mind. 3 toddlers who will never play again. A Trinity abandoned, sacrificed by our elected leaders on the altar of our selfishness. 3 light souls, heavy on the conscience of those who still have one.

Siamo tutti responsabili, nessuno escluso.

Today at least 100 more vulnerable people feared dead as their boat capsized off . Destroying independent search & rescue capacity in the will only lead to more unnecessary deaths at sea. The human cost is horrendous.

The conclusions can be read in many ways. My view: 1- As we disagree on how to fix the broken asylum system, let's resort to non-EU countries to solve this for us 2- We don't agree where people will be disembarked but we agree that if they reach Europe we may lock them up

Saddened by the loss of 100 lives today off the coast of Libya in Tajoura - 30 women and 70 men died after swimming for one hour before they were rescued. UNHCR teams supported the 16 survivors upon disembarkation with humanitarian and medical assistance

As EU-supported Libyan Coastguard keeps intercepting people at sea, number of those ending up in detention centres, where torture is rife, just reached 9000. Rather than helping them, decided to give even more resources to the Libyan Coastguard.

This was the long-awaited week when EU leaders would finally reform the EU asylum system. Instead, it became the week when they decided that asylum-seekers can stay out of Europe, or end up detained.

EU leaders applaude themselves: each has won a petty battle at & new ways to "stem influx" are on the table. Meanwhile, refugees/migrants have nothing to celebrate: - detention centres in Libya are filling up - more people are dying at sea - no new ways to travel safely
