What We Do In Croatia

The UNHCR is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.

In Croatia, UNHCR provides protection to asylum seekers, refugees, including those under temporary protection, and returnees. The Office focuses on strengthening the country's asylum system and protection capacities while continuing to pursue durable solutions for returnees, refugees and IDPs generated by the conflict 1991-1995.

UNHCR Croatia supports the Government of Croatia as it implements the multi-year Regional Housing Programme within the regional process. Following the accession of Croatia in September 2011 to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, UNHCR also promotes the development of a mechanism to identify and respond to the needs of stateless people.
