Ivorian refugees return home
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency
Description
Since 2011, a total of 287,000 Ivoirian refugees, representing over 92 per cent of those in West Africa, have voluntarily returned to Côte d'Ivoire and more are returning. Currently, 51,000 remain refugees and asylum seekers in the West and Central Africa region, out of which some 36,000 in Liberia. Most of them came from the Moyen-Cavally region of Côte d’Ivoire. Three quarters of those who have left the region have already returned. Since the end of August, UNHCR has launched a repatriation campaign, helping some 5,000 Ivorian refugees to return home and reintegrate. Two thousand of them come from Toe Town, a small town located twelve kilometers away from the border. We followed the repatriation of a family of six people to Toulepleu, the nearest town in Côte d’Ivoire.
