According to a professor of history at the University of California in Santa Barbara, there was an uprising of National Resistance Army (NRA) officers in the Luo area of northern Uganda in 1994 (10 May 1996). The source added that the uprising took place in Gilio, a city in northern Uganda's Luo area and the centre of northern opposition to the government (ibid.). The source further added that the uprising turned into an abortive coup attempt led by Luo officers within the NRA and was "definitely not led by Baganda" (ibid.). The source also stated that historically there has been constant friction between the northern Luo and the Bantu (Baganda) in Uganda and noted that the majority of officers in the NRA are Luo despite the fact that the government is Bantu (ibid.).
