The following information was provided during a 28 August 1996 telephone interview with a representative of the Embassy of Thailand in Ottawa.
The representative stated that a person holding a permanent visa is still considered a foreigner in Thailand. The holder of a permanent visa can apply for citizenship to the Ministry of the Interior, travel abroad and return to Thailand and send his/her children to school. The person can receive a work permit by applying to the Ministry of Labour in Thailand.
The representative stated that foreigners in Thailand do not require a permanent visa to marry Thai citizens.
The representative added that inter-faith marriages are common in Thailand. Buddism is an open and tolerant religion which does not require a person of another faith to convert upon marrying a Buddist. The representative added that there is an important and prosperous Punjabi and Sikh community in Thailand.
