According to a consular official at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Ottawa, a passport is sufficient as proof of identity for an Ethiopian re-entering Ethiopia (30 Sept. 2003). The official qualified his statement, however, by adding that if Ethiopian immigration officials have reason to doubt an individual's identity, they may require the person to produce additional documents (ibid.). As a result, the individual may either be detained at the airport for further questioning or allowed to enter the country on the condition that he report to an immigration office at a later date with additional identity documents (ibid.).

Corroborating information on whether a passport is sufficient documentation for an Ethiopian citizen re-entering Ethiopia, or whether additional identity documents are required by immigration officials at the Addis Ababa airport, could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
