On 5 June 2001 a representative of the Canadian embassy in Abu Dhabi, based on a source in Saudi Arabia, stated that it is possible for a citizen of Saudi Arabia (male or female) to sponsor a foreigner as a resident in Saudi Arabia even if the sponsor lives outside of Saudi Arabia. The representative also stated that foreigners in Saudi Arabia must always have a sponsor. Transfer of sponsorship would be possible "if the present [sponsor or sponsors] gave a non-objection letter to transfer sponsorship. Otherwise they have to leave the country or risk imprisonment for residing illegally in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
