The Belarusian security agency has announced it has arrested a military officer from neighboring Lithuania and "several of his informants" on suspicion of conducting espionage.

A statement that appeared on the Belarusian KGB's website on July 12 identified the Lithuanian as "Mister F" and alledged he was an agent of Lithuanian military intelligence who was carrying out an operation in Belarus.

It said the alleged spies were trying "to gain secret information in the military sphere."

The statement did not say how many people had been arrested in total or give their nationalities.

It said the arrest occurred on Belarusian territory, but did not specify where.

A Lithuanian Foreign Ministry spokesman told the AFP news agency that the charges are untrue.
