In a 5 December 1997 letter faxed to the Research Directorate, a lawyer from Mikijelj and Jankovic Attorneys-at-Law in Belgrade states that:
According to the article 294. of Yugoslav Army Act Recruiting comission can grant an exemption for a period no longer than two years... When expired, exemption may be renewed for a period not longer that two years, but only up to the end of a year in which recruit has his 27th birthday... There is no temporary exemption for recruit after his 27 years of age.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Resesarch Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
