Extensive research has failed to produce current information on the treatment of political opponents during detention. The attached Urgent Action from Amnesty International draws attention to the imposition of the death penalty for a student member of the Chhatra League in November 1985. [ Amnesty International, Death Penalty/Legal Concern, Urgent Action (AI Index: ASA 13/08/88), 24 May 1988.] According to Amnesty International Report 1989, the death sentence has since been commuted to life imprisonment. [ Amnesty International, Amnesty International Report 1989 (London: Amnesty International Publications, 1989), p. 163.] The other Amnesty International letter alleges that a student, Abu Sayed Moksedul Huq Rintu, died as a result of torture during detention. [ Amnesty International, "Death in Custody Reportedly Following Torture of Abu Sayed Moksedul Huq Rintu" (kAE Index: ASA 13/01/88) February 1988.]
