According to a senior analyst specialising in Romanian affairs at the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Research Institute, although there could be some occasional tensions between the Ukrainian and the Romanian communities for historical reasons, namely old border disputes, the conditions of Ukranians in Romania are far less critical than those experienced by the Hungarian and Gypsy communities in other parts of the country (3 Dec. 1993). The source did not mention any inter-ethnic incidents involving Ukranians. Please find attached a BBC report providing information on the Ukranian minority in Romania.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
