In a telephone interview on 23 February 2001, the Vice-Consul at the Consulate General of Morocco in Montreal stated that the "extrait d'acte de naissance" (birth certificate) is filed in Arabic. The French side will be filed only at the request of the holder (ibid.).
To apply for a "extrait d'acte de naissance" one has to go to their place of birth, where the birth has been registered (ibid.). The person does not have to be present to pick up the document; anyone such as a family member, can go on their behalf (ibid.). They need to present a document like a civil status booklet (livret d'état civil) or an expired birth certificate in order to obtain the "extrait d'acte de naissance" (ibid.).
