Pakistan: One year on, thousands displaced by 2010 floods are still without permanent housing as the new monsoon season begins

An estimated 800,000 families are still without adequate housing, one year after the massive floods disaster in 2010. The UN reported that 20,000 are still displaced, while tens of thousands are staying with relatives or have rented accommodation. Many flood defences, such as river embankments, have not yet been properly repaired since they were destroyed in last year's floods, increasing the likelihood of breaches in future floods.
According to the UN, up to two million people are likely to be affected by floods during this year's monsoon season, and up to six million according to the National Disaster Management Authority. Hundreds of villages have already been hit and whole communities displaced by new flooding in Sindh and Punjab provinces in the last few weeks. River water levels are also rising in the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
