Information on the Movement for the Advancement of Democracy in Nigeria (MADEN) is unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. However, sources indicate that there is an organization in Nigeria called the Movement for the Advancement of Democracy (MAD) (AFP 27 Oct. 1993; AP 30 Oct. 1993; BBC Summary 12 Jan. 1994; ibid. 1 Nov. 1993; ibid. 29 Oct. 1993). For details on the goals of MAD and what has become of this organization since its hijacking of a Nigerian Airways plane to Niamey, Niger on 23 October 1993, please refer to the attachments.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
