The following information was provided during an 18 June 1997 telephone interview with a representative of the Embassy of Iraq in Ottawa.

The source stated that military service remains compulsory for Iraqi citizens even if they left Iraq at an early age and returned after several years of living abroad. The source added that the person can be exempted by paying a fee of Cdn $750.00 either to the Iraqi embassy in Ottawa or to the Ministry of Defence in Baghdad. The person would receive a certificate confirming the exemption.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
