BISHKEK – A senior official at the Kyrgyz Prosecutor-General's Office has been arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe.

Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security (UKMK) said on March 25 that the chief of the prosecutor-general's investigative directorate had been caught red-handed accepting a $100,000 bribe in his office from a businessman.

The official was identified only by his initials, A.K.

The UKMK said the businessman, who was not named, told its anti-corruption directorate on March 19 that the official was demanding $200,000 in exchange for dropping charges against him.

The official was arrested and placed in the UKMK's detention center in the Central Asian nation's capital, Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan and other former Soviet republics are plagued by corruption.
