During a 20 November 1997 telephone interview, an Immigration attaché at the Embassy of the United States of America in Ottawa, explained that by leaving the USA before obtaining his or her landed immigrant status, a person who has been granted  refugee status in the USA loses automatically that status. The Immigration attaché added that the overall refugee determination process must be followed if that person wants to recover refugee status in the USA.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
