For information on female genital circumcision or female genital mutilation  (FGM) among the Yoruba, please consult the attached documents. According to Country Reports, although the government publicly opposes FGM, "[it] has taken no action to abolish the procedure, and many ethnic groups subject young females to it. ... The age at which females are subject to FGM varies from the first week of life to after a woman delivers her first child" (1997, 222).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
