BISHKEK – Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambaev has met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Kyrgyzstan's presidential press service says Atambaev on December 20 expressed support for the idea of India becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council under a proposal to expand the Council from 15 to 24 members.
A plan for an expanded UN Security Council with a total of 11 permanent members was one of two options proposed in 2005 by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Atambaev also thanked India for its support of Bishkek's candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for 2016-2018.
India had agreed to provide Kyrgyzstan with up to $2 million worth of medical equipment to treat oncological diseases.
Atambaev and Modi also agreed to continue "traditional cultural ties," and boost cooperation within the frameworks of the UN and Shanghai Cooperation Organization, of which Kyrgyzstan is a member and India has observer status.
