According to 31 March 2003 correspondence sent by an official at the Embassy of Canada, in Beijing, the information provided in CHN34770.E of 9 August 2000 remains current and no new information regarding the treatment of illegal emigrants repatriated to China is available (Canada).
Several articles reported on the repatriation of illegal Chinese emigrants to China from Taiwan (DPA 13 Oct. 2002; BBC Monitoring 22 Jan. 2002; CNA 8 Jan. 2001). However, there is no mention of the treatment of these migrants by the Chinese authorities in the reports.
A 30 January 2003 Daily Star article quoted Tom Davies of Loss Prevention International – ¾stating that, "'in most cases, the authorities really have little or no interest in the individuals we bring back.'"
