The following information was obtained during a 24 July 1996 interview with a representative from the Embassy of Myanmar in Washington, DC. The Mojahid Bahini is a Muslim rebel group from Bangladesh that was formed in the mid-seventies. On several occasions the group had clashed with Burmese armed forces while attempting to illegally cross the border and settle in Burma.

During a 24 July 1996 interview with a representative from the High Commission of Bangladesh, it was stated that the term Mojahid Bahini means Muslim armed forces in Arabic. The same source indicated that the group might be a self-proclaimed fundamentalist organization, since it does not have official status in Bangladesh.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
