An official at the Embassy of the Union of Myanmar in Ottawa stated in a 19 June 1995 telephone interview that each citizenship case is determined on an individual basis. This representative indicated that she is unable to comment on the above-mentioned subject without being provided with information, for example, on the exact date the person left Myanmar or whether this person's name is included in his or her parents' passport (ibid.).

Further information on this specific subject could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, for general information on the 1982 Citizenship Law of Myanmar and on the right to Myanmar citizenship of persons who left Myanmar with official documents and who have since taken up foreign citizenship, please refer to Responses to Information Requests ZZZ17396.E of 31 May 1994 and BUR16008.E of 3 February 1994, as well as to page 545 of Country Reports for 1994 and the attached documents. Please note that the deadline for citizenship reinstatement for these persons has been extended until 31 December 1995 (Xinhua 27 Jan. 1995).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find attached the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
