U.S. officials say a military detainee in Afghanistan will be transferred to the United States for trial.
The prisoner, known by the nom de guerre Irek Hamidullan, is a Russian veteran of the Soviet war in Afghanistan who defected to the Taliban and stayed in the country.
He was captured in 2009 and has been held at a detention facility at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan.
The officials said on October 23 that Hamidullan would be tried in a federal court in Virginia on unspecified terrorism charges.
It would mark the first time a foreign combatant captured in Afghanistan would be brought to the United States for trial.
Analysts say the Obama administration is keen to show that it can use the criminal court system to deal with terror suspects.
