According to an official of the British High Commission in Ottawa, the amount of time required to decide a refugee claim, also called a political asylum request, would vary from case to case (9 Dec. 1993). However, on average it takes 18 months (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
