Attached please find the excerpt on the United States from US Committee for Refugees' World Refugee Survey 1996, which gives statistics on refugee determination in the United States, and describes asylum procedures and legislative developments relative to refugee determination in that country. No specific statistics were found in the excerpt regarding Nicaraguan refugee claims nor specific references to the treatment of Nicaraguan refugee claimants in the United States. Likewise, no specific references to Nicaraguan refugee claimants in the United States were found in World Refugee Survey reports from 1992 to 1995.

A 3 August 1995 article from the Tampa Tribune on Nicaraguans who entered the United States illegally, may, however, be of interest. The article states that the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was attempting to have Nicaraguans file documents necessary to the reconsideration of their asylum claims in the United States (Tampa Tribune 3 Aug. 1995). About 45,000 Nicaraguans in the United States were facing deportation at the time (ibid.).

No further references to the treatment of Nicaraguan refugee claimants in the United States nor to the approval rate of Nicaraguan refugee claims in that country from 1992 to the present were found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
