General Defections

Information on whether any Mongolian citizens defected from cultural or sporting delegations within Canada between 2004 and 2006 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, the Research Directorate was able to find information on the participation of Mongolian delegations at both the Festival international de théâtre de Mont-Laurier of September 2005 (Double Défi 3 May 2006) and the World Masters Games held in Edmonton in July 2005 (In the Games Spring 2005).

Festival international de théâtre de Mont-Laurier

Double Défi is a non-profit organization in the Upper Laurentians that organizes cultural events (n.d.b) such as the Festival international de théâtre de Mont-Laurier (n.d.a). In a 3 May 2006 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the Director General of Double Défi stated the following:

All members of the Mongolian theatrical group Ungut Ineed did indeed perform as scheduled during the Festival international de théâtre de Mont-Laurier in September 2005. They were present from the first day of the festival and performed for seven days. They are well known to Double Défi because they had previously performed at the Festival in 2003.

According to the Website of Double Défi, Ungut Ineed was nominated for the Public's Special Award at the 2005 Festival (2005a), and according to the school newspaper of the Cégep de Sainte-Foy, Le Rapporteur, it won the Public's Award at the 2003 Festival (29 Aug. 2005).

An English-language synopsis of the play put on by Ungut Ineed at the Festival international de théâtre de Mont-Laurier in September 2005, as well as the names of the cast and crew, can be found on the Website of Double Défi (n.d.b).

World Masters Games

In correspondence sent to the Research Directorate, the secretary general of the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), as well as a spokesperson for the Edmonton games, confirmed the registration of 17 athletes from Mongolia at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton (IMGA 4 May 2006; WMG 4 May 2006). However, the spokesperson for the World Masters Games indicated that all but six of the seventeen registered athletes were accredited, meaning that these six "did not compete as best we can tell" (ibid.). Further or corroborating information on the lack of participation of these six athletes, however, could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate within time constraints.

The newsletter of the 2005 World Masters Games, In the Games, indicated that there were registrations from Mongolia (Spring 2005). In weightlifting, the Mongolian team apparently earned 50 points by 29 July 2005 (WMG 29 July 2005b) and a Mongolian delegation was present at the International Wrestling Federation (IWF)'s congress held on 26 July 2005 (IWF-Masters Weightlifting Newsletter 30 Aug. 2005). In shooting (by pistol), Lkhagva Undralbat of Mongolia placed third in the centre-fire match for the 30 to 54 age group, which was held on 29 July 2005 (WMG 29 July 2005a).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
