According to a representative of the Consular section of the British High Commission in Ottawa, a non-British man who is married to a woman who holds British nationality is not automatically entitled to British nationality (19 March 1993). Before 1983, a non-British man who was married to a woman holding British nationality would have had to be residing in the United Kingdom for five consecutive years before being able to apply for naturalization as a British national (Ibid.).
After 1983, a non-British man who was married to a woman holding British nationality would have had to be established in the United Kingdom for three consecutive years before being able to apply for naturalization as a British national (Ibid.).
Additional and/or corroborative information on the above subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
