No reference to the shooting death of three individuals of the Hizbullah party during the period of 1999-2000 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, some reports that may be of interest, link the Hizibullah political party with an October 1996 triple murder on Gorah-Issac street, Port-Lous.
Referring to Cehl Meeah, the leader of the Hizbullah political party, a 4 November 2001 article stated that [translation] he must leave the high security prison of La Bastille to respond to accusations of the preliminary investigations into triple murder on Gorah-Issac street on the day before the municipal elections of October 1996 (Le Mauricien 4 Nov. 2001). The same Mauritius newspaper noted, in an 26 October 2001 article that, accused of being behind of the 26 October 1996 triple murder of the Gorah-Issac Street, Cehl Meeah was at that time detained at La Bastille prison.
In 12 December 2000 responses to Parliamentary questions, Prime Minister explained that Cehl Meeah was in police custody since 4 December 2000 in connection of the 26 October 1996 killing of three persons (The Government of Mauritius 12 Dec. 2000). The Prime Minister added that "the Gorah Issac case is presently the subject matter of an in-depth police inquiry. After completion of the enquiry, police will refer to the Director of Public Prosecution who will take a decision as to any eventual criminal prosecution" (ibid.).
A 19 January 2001 AP article explained that " the1996 killings of three political activists took place in Plaine Verte, a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood in the capital, Port-Louis. The victims were local officials of the then ruling Labour Party – Mouvement Militant Mauricien alliance [MLP-MMM] alliance."
According to Country Reports 2000,
On December 4, authorities arrested Hizbullah leader Mohammad Fakemeeah (also known as Cehl Meeah) and charged him with the killings of three rival Muslim political activists during the 1996 municipal elections campaign. By year's end, police had arrested three other Hizbullah members in connection with the killings (Country Reports 2000 2001, Sect. 1. a).
Information the conclusion of the police investigations into the killing of three persons at Gorah Issac street could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
