The information contained in this response was provided by a representative of the High Commission of Ghana in Ottawa during a telephone interview with the IRBDC (21 Nov. 1991). According to the representative, Ghanaian students are required to complete at least one year of national service before entrance to a university and one year upon completion. The representative further stated that students have the option of completing the two years of national service consecutively before entrance to university. If a student decides not to continue with university education, he or she still has the option of completing the two years consecutively. The representative added that military service is not a compulsory component of the national service. National service, he explained, is an educational program, the purpose of which is to teach Ghanaians about their country. The representative indicated that students perform national service in locations outside their home areas.
