The Czech Council for National Minorities' 29 October 1997 report entitled Report on the Situation of the Romani Community in the Czech Republic and Government Measures Assisting its Integration in Society (no. 686) has been translated into English in its entirety and is now available at Regional Documentation Centres. This report contains the recommendations listed in Response to Information Request CZE28476.E as well as a lengthy (over 150 pages) dissertation on the general situation of the Roma community in the Czech Republic. It also contains numerous appendices with related statistical data.

Two UNHCR reports entitled Guidelines Relating to the Eligibility of Czech Roma Asylum Seekers and Guidelines Relating to the Eligibility of Slovak Roma Asylum Seekers are currently available at Regional Documentation Centres. The February 1998 reports, produced by the UNHCR's Prague and Vienna offices, provide information on discrimination, intolerance and violence as well as housing, employment and education issues. Furthermore, the reports contain sections on state protection and the analysis of refugee claims. Commentary on the 1993 Czech Citizenship Law is also provided.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
