A U.S. general says Islamic State militants have set up training camps in eastern Libya and the United States is monitoring them.

Army Gen. David Rodriguez, who heads U.S. Africa Command, told reporters at the Pentagon on December 3 that there may be a couple of hundred fighters undergoing training at the sites, but details are sketchy.

He called this a "nascent" development that does not amount to a large or well-organized effort. He did not say how many camps are operating.

Rodriguez said the camps are not a target "right now" for potential U.S. air strikes.

He said the United States has no troops on the ground in Libya.
