The BBC reported on 31 August 1993 that the interim government of Chief Ernest Shonekan had ordered the immediate release of three so-called "agitators of democracy" detained in the aftermath of protests in Lagos two months earlier. The three detainees, Femi Falana, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti had been charged with conspiracy and sedition (ibid.). The DIRB is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
