According to a researcher at the Andean Commission of Jurists in Lima, a number of political figures, including a few from the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana (APRA) party, were placed under house arrest for a few days following the 5 April 1992 constitutional coup of President Alberto Fujimori (6 May 1993). The house arrest was decreed and enforced against prominent figures only, and consisted of preventing them from leaving their homes (Ibid.). Although the house arrest was not directed against the politicians' families or other members of their households, the security belt established around their homes may have intimidated and perhaps dissuaded relatives or visitors from freely entering or leaving (Ibid.).

Please note that the Andean Commission of Jurists was not asked by the DIRB to research the particular circumstances of the house arrest of a specific political figure.

Additional information on the house arrest and subsequent release of politicians following the 5 April 1992 coup can be found in the Indexed Media Review (IMR), the August 1992 Americas Watch report attached to Response to Information Request PER14041 of 6 May 1993, and the August 1992 DIRB Question and Answer Paper Peru: Impact of the April 1992 Coup, all available at your Regional Documentation Centre.
