A Kazakh woman in the western city of Aqtau has been sentenced to four years in jail for propagating Islamic extremism via the Internet.

Aqtau city prosecutor Talghat Alibaev told journalists the woman, whose name was not given, was sentenced on January 29.

Officials said the woman, 28, acted alone.

Investigators say she was producing audio files that attempted to justify the activities of Islamic jihadists in Syria and was distributing them electronically via the WhatsApp application.

Kazakh authorities said last year that some 300 Kazakhs had gone to Syria to fight alongside jihadists against Syrian troops.

There have been several security operations in western Kazakhstan in recent years targeting people accused of Islamic extremism.
