In a 26 April 1999 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, a media relations manager at the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) in Salt Lake City stated that there are roughly 70,000 Uruguayans who belong to the 175 congregations in the country. This number represents approximately two per cent of the Uruguayan population (ibid.). According to the manager, the organization has received no reports of members being harassed or threatened in Uruguay.
