In a 29 July 2005 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the consul at the embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Washington, DC provided the following information:
Upon acquiring an international passport, Tajik citizens are not required to surrender their internal passport, and are allowed to possess both passports at the same time. The passports are independent from one another. However, a Tajik in possession of an expired passport who would like to obtain a new passport must surrender their expired passport. Certain situations in which an expired passport contains important visas can be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
According to the consul, international passports are valid for five years but internal passports do not have expiry dates, although new photos must be obtained every 20 years.
