Lebanon's army says it has confirmed that it has detained Majid al-Majid, the alleged leader of the Al-Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades.

The group has claimed responsibility for the double suicide bombing that targeted the Iranian Embassy in Beirut in November, killing at least 23 people, and other attacks.

The army said in a statement that a DNA test confirmed that a man in detention was Majid al-Majid, a Saudi national.

The statement did not make clear, however, where and when he was arrested.

The Sunni Islamist Abdullah Azzam Brigades have condemned Shi'ite-led Iran over its support for the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in neighboring Syria.

The United States has officially designated the Abdullah Azzam Brigades as a terrorist organization.
