The following information was provided during a 21 October 1997 telephone interview with the military affairs representative at the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ottawa.
The source stated that all Iranian citizens must perform their military service when called-up by the army. There are no exemptions to military service based on religious or ethnic affiliations in Iran today or during the war with Iraq. The source stated that today people who were born before 1958 are exempted from military service.
