In a telephone interview on 30 January 1997, a Canadian immigration official stated that the point of entry (POE) nearest to Plattsburg, New York, is Lacolle, Quebec (ibid). The official also stated that a creek runs within 500 metres of the POE and that there are no impediments to walking across the border in the vicinity (ibid.). According to the official, the border crossing can easily be crossed and that illegal border crossings are common (ibid.). The official could not indicate however, how many illegal border crossings have taken place near this POE (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
