Country Reports 2001, available electronically and at Regional Documentation Centres, contains a detailed discussion on the situation of, and discrimination against, foreigners in Japan (see "Japan," Section 5.d).
Further to this, please find attached some news articles that report on the situation of foreigners in Japan, as well as foreign women who marry Japanese men and live in Japan, including a discussion of cultural and family problems that can arise in the union. Also attached is a review of the book Looking Beyond the Mask: When American Women Marry Japanese Men, which also discusses some of the key issues that the book deals with (Japan Times 6 Jan. 2002). A copy of the book reviewed could not be obtained by the Research Directorate within the constraints of this Response.
