According to a representative of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Ottawa, generally speaking, persons born in Sudan while it was still the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium have no right to Egyptian citizenship (30 Dec. 1994). Please consult Responses to Information Requests EGY10094 of 17 January 1992 and SDN87333 of 3 June 1991, available through your Regional Documentation Centre for further information on Egyptian citizenship law. In addition, please find attached a copy of excerpts from a 29 May 1975 UNHCR document, which is an unofficial translation of the Arab Republic of Egypt's nationality law. For general information on the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium, please see the attached documents entitled Constitutions of the Countries of the World and The New Encyclopaedia Britannica.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
