The only March 1988 reference to Huacrachuco found among the sources currently available to the DIRB refers to an attack against a police station. In mid-March 1988 an armed column of guerrillas belonging to the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA) reportedly attacked the Huacrachuco police station, but was repelled by a dozen policemen (AFP 19 Mar. 1988). The police high commands of Trujillo (department of La Libertad) and Chiclayo (department of Lambayeque) chose to send reinforcements by helicopter "because the police station is in a town surrounded by jungle" (Ibid.).
In mid-March 1988 Peruvian television reported that the government "extended the state of emergency for 60 days in several provinces of Apurímac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Hu nuco departments" (Televisión Peruana 17 Mar. 1988). The only available report, however, does not specify which provinces of the department of Hu nuco were under the state of emergency at the time.
Additional and/or corroborating information could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
