An official at the Embassy of Sao Tome and Principe at the United Nations in New York stated that a child born in Angola of an Angolan mother and a Sao Tome and Principe father can be a citizen of Sao Tome and Principe if his or her parents register him or her at the embassy of Sao Tome and Principe. When registering the child, the parents should present the following documentation: a document issued at the hospital where the child was born to indicate that the birth has been recorded, and documentary proof that the father is a citizen of Sao Tome and Principe. The child will then be issued a document called a "Certificate of Birth." The child retains the right to choose whether or not he or she will remain a citizen of Sao Tome and Principe or become a citizen of Angola at the age of 18. Sao Tome and Principe does not accept dual nationality (26, 31 Jan. 2001).
