On 13 April 2000 an official at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Washington, DC stated that
Alternative [mandatory military] service is available in Slovakia. According the recent change approved by Parliament the alternative civilian service is 1.5 times mandatory military service (12 months), it means 18 months. This is for all young men refusing military service. The failure to complete mandatory military service or alternative civilian service is considered to be a criminal act and the penalty could be from 6 month to 10 years according to the situation.
This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
